Rowayton School is a unique and dynamic professional learning community.  Our K through 5th grade school comprised a blend of 423 enthusiastic, diverse students and an exceptional faculty and amazing parents who endlessly volunteer their time and finances.

This combination of kids who are excited to learn and teachers who are prepared and supported to teach brings out truly the best experience that any school can provide children – either public or private!  This is a result of the excellence we strive for in our rigorous academic programs and in our vast extracurricular activities.

CMT Scores

Our CMT scores are above the state average, and in some areas, Rowayton Elementary School's CMT scores exceed those scores of neighboring districts of wealthier towns.

Teacher Excellence

Our school is an affiliate with Teachers College Columbia University, and so the faculty and leadership team meet on a regular basis to reflect on successful instructional practices with Columbia staff members.

Many Rowayton School teachers have advanced degrees.  All members of our PLC (Professional Learning Community) actively participate in Professional Development related to the Reading and Writing Workshop model.

Our faculty teams have recently attended workshops in Science, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and Mathematics.  Even our aides and support staff receive training throughout the year.

The Leadership Team, comprised of the Principal and Assistant Principal, attend the Association for Supervision Curriculum and Development Conferences and implement current practices related to successful schools.

Character and Citizenship

At our school, all our students are immersed throughout the school year in our Character Education Program.  We study fundamental skills such as:

  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Caring
  • Trustworthiness.

Our students model these traits at every monthly assembly and community circle meetings.  Students’ feedback and input into the educational process is valued and respected.

 Enrichment through the Performing Arts

We are truly grateful to have such an outstanding music teacher, Miss Alex Kemeny, in our school.  Miss Kemeny writes our own school musicals and directs the monthly assemblies which inspire and educate our school family.  Miss Kemeny is also vice-president of The Crystal Theater in Norwalk.

Our PTA (Parents Group) sponsors many extra activities to enrich our children, especially school wide assemblies and visits from national and international authors, performers, artists and dancers throughout the year.  We have had performances this year from:

•     Russian Dancers /Folk Dance Troupe from St. Petersburg, Russia – Performance
•     Rosa Parks play / Musical about the life of Rosa Parks
•     Child’s Play Touring Theatre -  performing plays written by our 2nd graders
•     Jack Sprat Lo-Fat World Tour/ Musical about nutrition and healthy eating habits

•     MaryAnn Hoberman (Acclaimed children’s author) visits with each grade and discusses her

     books and writing process
•     Shakespeare on the Sound storyteller meets with each grade to discuss the upcoming play

We are proud of our enrichment programs like Odyssey of the Mind where our school has demonstrated impressive results at the State and National levels.

Our After School Program focused on closing the achievement gap between students and for example, provides time and resources to those students who need extra help in homework.  Learn more about other enrichment programs on our website.
